- Description
- In Europe and the USA during the latter half of the nineteenth century there emerged an interest in the decorative 'artistic' interior that was propelled by the ready availability of manufactured products and a desire to arrange them 'tastefully'. To help decipher 'good' products and interiors from those unacceptable to prevalent taste and style, a number of advice manuals and periodical articles appeared. For many women the ability to 'keep up appearances' and negotiate the conventions of society required advice on appropriate clothing, dinner parties, adornments, colour schemes, and so on. Articles on such issues were included in family literary magazines aimed at upper and middle-class women, who if they were gifted took on the role of decorator, or employed a professional. Grace Lees-Maffei argues that advice writers presented domesticity as professionalized, valorizing 'homemaking to be as much a form of production as consumption'. Some of these same women also championed women's rights and enacted forms of protestation, either as direct advocates or social commentators on change and disruption. Annmarie Adams and Peta Tancred confirm that, as 'early as 1876, women were employed as professional, independent interior decorators in England, with close links to feminist political struggles'. However, a close examination of the literature suggests that many women had difficulty in reconciling traditional values with the world of the 'new woman'.
